THE BEE GEES

  Barry Gibb

  Robin Gibb

 Maurice Gibb

The Bee Gees, the group that we name the best all over the world, in the past, now and forever started their career in 1966 in Australia.  In their career they have had a lot of success.

The story starts in Douglas, where Barry was born in the 1st May of 1946. We know that was a hard day for his mum, but at least was great, wasn’t it?

Three years later, in the 22nd of December of 1949, the twins were born. Maurice & Robin (Who would say they’re twins!) Poor Barbara, if she hasn’t had enough with Barry now the babies were coming in pairs! The family had increased so much (Lesley, Barry, Robin & Maurice), but 9 years later, Andy “good-looking” Gibb was born, another more! But thanks God their parents stopped.

The Gibb Family, without Lesley.

Few years later they decided to return to Manchester, where Hugh (the head of the family) started to work. Barry & Robin were great at the school choir. Was here the beginning of music!

Few years later they emigrated to Australia because of some reasons. Was there when one day while the mother was doing housework asked her husband:

-Are the boys vexing you? I tell them to turn down the volume of the radio, darling?

Hugh answered:

-Let them do what they want to do… They aren’t vexing me at all. Let them sing

Barbara surprised because of the answer of her husband, decided to go where the brothers were singing to verify that were the Gibb that sang not the radio. And yes they were!! Were the Gibb singing one of the highest hits of the moment: Lolly Pop. But very good!!

The Bee Gees when children

Since they were born, their hobby was to sing and compose songs. And it’s for that, every weekend they were going to the nearest pubs to offer to the tourists and natives their simple but also sweet songs.

In an Australian cinema, they used to sing between showings. But one day, suddenly the disk which they had chosen to sing with, was broken by an employee of the cinema (was an accident). But then they decided spontaneously to sing a cappella though the cinema’s head wanted to cancel the performance. Was then when the cinema’s head got fascinated with their voices and decided to pay their bus tickets, and also told them to return. They did. (of course).

Because of their success on the streets, Bill Gates (not Microsoft president’s, another man more important, unless for us.), invited them to record a song in his studio. Was the beginning of recording albums.

The first albums they recorded in Australia arrived at national charts, but it wasn’t till they had recorded Spicks & Specks that they didn’t arrive at the Top of the charts. With the money earned with the hit, they could pay the tickets back home (Great Britain).

In that moment in the U.K. there was a furor for a group of Liverpool, called The Flies… oh no! The Beetles (with our respect to The Beatles). But also with this ‘problem’, The Bee Gees arrived at their level and also surpassed them with few years. They had arrived in the precise moment. Swiftly they took the control of the charts. Then they had great hits like: Massachusetts, I’ve Gotta Get A Message To You and more.

  Barry, Maurice & Robin

Unfortunately, in 1969, Barry and Robin argued, and group broke up. The argument was provoked because of the decision of which song has to be the first to record in the new single. Robin started his solo career, but Barry and Maurice continued some months together as the Bee Gees, but finally they definitely broke up.

Thanks God, one year and a half later (1971), the brothers got united again. That day they recorded How Can You Mend A Broken Heart which was a successful hit.

Now they were the kings of the U.K. and decided going to the U.S.A. where they will triumph after few years.

The first U.S.A. hit, was Main Course, album that includes the first #1 in the U.S.A.: Jive Talkin’. This song was preceded by Nights On Broadway and Fanny, both arrived a the TOP-10. There was the first time they used their marvelous and magic falsetto.

Main Course album was preceded by Children Of The World, where there is: You Should Be Dancing (the best song to make people dance!). Is one of their very big success hits.

The beginning to the highest fly

At least by their manager Robert Stigwood, came the film that took them to the heaven of music, where nobody has arrived, only them, was: Saturday Night Fever!! This film made them be the kings of Disco Music. With this album they sold more than 40.000.000 copies!! This is the most sold soundtrack of all history, and also the second most sold album, only surpassed by Michael Jackson with ‘Thriller’.

Saturday Night Fever has three #1 that are:

- Stayin’ Alive

- Night Fever

- How Deep Is Your Love

Without comments, do you agree? (haha)

The People hadn’t enough. They wanted more and more. Then they recorded Spirits Having Flown that didn’t arrive at 40 millions albums sold, but sold 20.000.000 albums. This album had three #1 too, they are:

- Tragedy

- Love You Inside Out

- Too Much Heaven (dedicated it profit to U.N.I.C.E.F.)

Then the Bee Gees were at the top, where nobody had arrived before and where nobody has arrived.

6 #1 consecutively it’s what everybody wants!! But only the Bee Gees are able to do!!

The Bee Gees in Hollywood, THE STARS!!

In 1981 they recorded the album Living Eyes, but it didn’t have the success they tough it would have. Because of this they decided to stop for a while and stay with their families. Then they decided to try again their solo careers but keeping the group united.

Barry was the most lucky of them, he composed for his friends, like: Barbara Streisand, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers,… Some of them had success, thanks Barry.

In 1986 they started again with E.S.P. an album that has some success in the U.K. but not in the U.S.A.

In 1989, they released the album One, dedicated to Andy who was dead (some months before the releasing) because of drugs that produced them a heart attack. This album had success all over the world, above all the songs: Tokyo Nights and the one that has the same name as the album, One.

Two years later, in 1991 the album released by them was High Civilization, had a great success in the U.K. the song Secret Love of this album.

In 1993 was released the album Size Isn’t Everything. A lot of fans think is one of their best albums but it didn’t have a lot of success. Here the song we have to talk about is Blue Island which is dedicated to the children of the Yugoslavia’s war. This album includes a new and reformed version of You Should Be Dancing whose name is Decadence.

The 1997 was a year of success for the Bee Gees. They won a lot of prizes, they also were inducted in The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in May. They also won the VH-1 Fashion Award, The International Artist Award, The Lifetime Achievement Award and The Lifetime Contribution to Music too.  They were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in Ohio and Cleveland. When Still Waters was released in the same year, were ‘The Artist Of The Month’ by VH-1. In Europe were rewarded with the BAMBI Award and also The Golden European Award by Germany. After all that with Still Waters was #1 in Billboard charts. They sold 1.000.000 singles of Alone and was at #13 of U.S.A. charts and also was in the TOP-10 of U.K.

In 1998 the Bee Gees released the album One Night Only, which is a live concert in Las Vegas. Was a #3 in the Eurochart. In that concert they proved that they weren’t finished, and their career will continue.

In 2001, This Is Where I Came In is the album released. It’s a great success, and the songs are great!!
